Supportive Living Communities: How to Find the Just-Right Fit

Choosing where and how to live as we get older is one of the most important lifestyle decisions we can make. For many, it represents a balance of independence, safety, wellness, and connection. While some people may feel most comfortable staying at home, others thrive with the support and community that supportive living options offer. Understanding the choices available helps to find the just-right fit for this next chapter of life.

supportive living

aging in place or supportive living communities

Deciding between aging in place and moving to a supportive living facility involves weighing personal preferences, health needs, finances, and social factors. Both offer different factors to consider.

defining the two
  • aging in place: aging in place means staying in your own home as long as possible to maintain independence and familiar surroundings, but it can come with challenges like home maintenance, safety risks, and the need for increasing care and social support
  • supportive living facility: supportive living communities offer maintenance-free living with support, medical care, and social activities, providing safety and assistance while adapting to changing care needs, though they may involve higher costs and less privacy
elements to keep in mind
  • health status and care needs: are you managing well independently, or is daily assistance becoming necessary?
  • home environment: is your home safe and easy to modify for mobility and accessibility?
  • social support: do you have strong local connections, or would community living offer more social engagement?
  • financial resources: what are the costs of home modifications, in-home care, and maintenance compared to supportive living fees?
  • personal preferences: which environment feels more comfortable and fulfilling for lifestyle and emotional well-being?

supportive living community options available

Supportive living is not one-size-fits-all. Depending on health, lifestyle, and personal goals, there are several choices that provide varying levels of independence and support.

  • active adult communities: for active older adults that desire maintaining an independent lifestyle and community amenities, and is distinct from other supportive living options as it does not typically provide bundles services, healthcare, or meals
  • independent living communities: designed for active older adults looking to keep their independence and privacy, while enjoying maintenance services and personal care amenities to make life easier
  • assisted living communities: daily support for adults that don’t require 24/7 skilled nursing care, but receive assistance such as meals, medication management, and personal care
  • memory care facilities: specialized residential settings providing 24/7 care, supervision, and activities for individuals living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia
  • skilled nursing home: provides 24/7 medical care and rehabilitative services for residents
  • continuing care retirement communities: offer a blend of services, allowing residents to transition to higher levels of care as needed
