I’ll be scattering related topics throughout the month, so stay tuned! This week, we are tuning into Save Your Vision Month! In today’s post, I’m taking a dive into vision and aging.

There are several types of vision changes that are common as we age. One of the most prevalent is presbyopia, which is an age-related gradual loss of lens accommodation, or the eye’s ability to focus on nearby objects. The National Eye Institute (NEI; 2016) reports that presbyopia affects nearly everyone over the age of 50. This condition often becomes noticeable around age 40 and can make reading and other close-up tasks more difficult. In North America, the National Institute of Health (NIH; 2016) reports a nearly 80% prevalence by ages 45-55, with an estimated 16% without adequate correction.
Top 5 Age-Related Causes of Vision Impairment
According to the World Health Organization (WHO; 2022), approximately 2.2 billion people worldwide have vision impairments, and the majority of these individuals are over the age of 50. In over half of these cases, the vision impairment could have been prevented, or has yet to even be addressed. Globally, WHO reports that the leading causes of vision impairment are age-related macular degeneration, cataract, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and uncorrected refractive errors.
Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive, chronic condition that affects the macula, the part of the retina that is responsible for sharp, central vision, and can cause a loss of visual acuity or even blindness. According to the NEI (NEI/NIH, 2016), approximately 2.1 million Americans over the age of 50 have late-stage AMD, with 65% of the cases in women. As the population ages, this number is expected to increase to 5.44 million by 2050.
Cataracts
Cataracts occur when the lens of the eye becomes cloudy or discolored due to a clumping of proteins. Cataracts can cause vision to become blurry or hazy and can make it difficult to see in low light conditions. Other symptoms include faded colors, glare, poor night vision, and double vision. The NEI reports that cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide, and they affect more than half of all Americans over the age of 80.
Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy occurs when chronically high blood sugars cause abnormal blood vessels to grow along the surface of the retina and into the eye. This results in fluid or blood leaking into the eye, causing blurred or spotted vision (NEI/NIH, 2016). There were 29 million people in the US living with diabetes in 2019, and that number is predicted to grow to one-third of all US adults by 2050 – that’s over 80 million people!
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a chronic condition involving a group of eye disorders. Key characteristics include deterioration of the optic nerve or specific changes in a visual field. In most types of glaucoma, fluid builds up in the eye, causing increased pressure, which damages the optic nerve over time, leading to blindness. In 2010, there were an estimated 2.7 million adults with glaucoma, and it is anticipated to increase to more than 6 million by 2050 (NEI/NIH, 2016).
Refractive Error
Refractive error comes from an irregular shape of the cornea, lens, or eyeball, preventing light from focusing properly on the retina. Symptoms of uncorrected refractive error can include blurry vision, headaches, haziness, and eye strain (NEI/NIH, 2016). This is the most common cause of vision impairment in adults in the US at approximately 48 million adults aged 40 and over.
The Impact of Visual Impairment
The impact of visual impairments on aging and families can be significant. For example, individuals with vision impairments may experience social isolation, as they may be unable to participate in activities that they once enjoyed. The American Foundation for the Blind reports that older adults with vision impairments are more likely to experience falls and other accidents than those without impairments. They also report that the economic impact of vision loss among older adults is significant, with costs associated with healthcare, lost productivity, and reduced quality of life totaling over $139 billion annually.
Additionally, family members may feel the strain of providing care and assistance to their loved ones with visual impairments. Caring for a loved one with vision impairments can be emotionally and physically demanding, and it can be challenging to balance caregiving responsibilities with other obligations.
Testing & Treatment
Fortunately, there are several vision tests available to detect vision impairments early on. These tests can help individuals and their families prepare for the changes that come with aging and ensure that they receive the necessary care and support. One common test is the Snellen chart, which measures visual acuity by having individuals read letters of varying sizes from a chart. Another test is the Amsler grid, which measures the macula’s function and can detect early signs of AMD. Additionally, eye doctors can perform a dilated eye exam to check for cataracts and other eye diseases.
Treatment is available for many vision impairments. For example, individuals with presbyopia can use reading glasses or bifocals to improve their near vision. Cataract surgery is a common treatment for cataracts and involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial lens. Additionally, there are several treatments available for AMD, including medications and laser therapy.

There are also several opportunities for prevention, which can help individuals maintain healthy vision as they age. One of the most effective ways to prevent vision impairments is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This includes diet, exercise, and not smoking.

- Lutein and zeaxanthin: These antioxidants are found in leafy green vegetables, such as spinach, kale, and collard greens, and can help protect the eyes from damage.
- Anthocyanins: These antioxidants can help improve night vision and are found in dark-colored fruits, such as blueberries, blackberries, and cherries.
